The 7 Types of People You Find on Instagram
Instagrammers, let’s keep it real. Instagram’s massive popularity stems from one basic fact:
We don’t want to read about it on Facebook. Watching videos is a waste of time (except the best vines of the week). Tweeting gets tedious. But Instagram meets our needs. Colorful schematics of fashion, art, culture, food. Enticing destinations and enchanting romances. Adorable babies and fluffy pets. The instant gratification is addicting. The affinity for scrolling is embedded in our souls. The persuasion to double tap is plenty. As your time on Instagram increases, you’ll find a staple of certain characters who make the Instagram world go round:
The Despised Ex
You can’t stand them, yet they pop up when you least expect it. Someone you follow likes their pic and next thing you know you’re eye-to-eye with that ex that makes you sick. Two choices: delete that friend or lurk on! (I choose delete, delete, delete!)
The Frenemy
You’re not exactly friends, but you’ve moved past the gossip and backstabbing. You don’t REALLY like her outfits or her new boyfriend, but you double tap for peace. For now.
The Selfie Queen
Why don’t we block these people? They saturate our timelines with selfie after selfie, but after awhile, you just get used to it. After that, you start to look forward to the daily fashion show.
The Gym Rat
Dumbbells, barbells, squats and situps. Gym rats are self-righteous, braggy and annoying. Yet, they secretly motivate us. So we scroll on.
The Annoying Couple
Every single post is a we’re-in-love-look-at-us photo opp. We’re in love at dinner. We’re in love at Costco. We’re in love over bacon and eggs. NEXT!
The Meme-er
This person has the funniest, most offensive and outgrageous memes that make us laugh and roll our eyes. The meme-er has nothing better to do but keep us entertained all day long.
The Free-Spirited Artist
The sky is a canvas. Travel is life. The crack in the sidewalk is beauty. Words are powerful, artists are quoted. This person finds meaning everywhere, and isn’t afraid to show it. We all need a fresh perspective, which they serve regularly.

Because I’m so in love with photography and I believe that’s what IG is essentially designed for, I don’t follow many people who fall into just one category. Nothing personal, but if I don’t like the pictures they post (i.e. paragraphs, overbearing party/music/business venture promo, constant memes , and photos found on tumblr.) I unfollow with a quickness. I have a few selfie queens who balance out their overload of selfies with real life pictures…the same with free thinkers and artist; “gym rats” and college students. If I don’t care for them as a person, I don’t follow at all, because I don’t pry on people I don’t like. I think I’d fall along the lines of free spirited artist. Mine is pretty simple and I’m careful about the images I put into my head everyday. Maybe that’s just me.

Nope, no exes on my timeline – it’s just unnecessary. I have 2 Gym Rat friends on IG, lol.
There was a time I’d follow some fashion bloggers cos everyone would rave about them, but as time went on, I realized I didn’t particularly care for their styles, so I unfollowed.
